Philosophy, Mission and Objectives

There are many philosophies and ways to approach the concept of giving a sound bath.  An exciting aspect of working with sound is the ability to use philosophical foundations for a sound bath from a more mainstream musical and harmonic approach through other less known concepts such as the release of blocked energy within the chakras, or exploring the relationship between the length of the orbits of the planets to the length of sound waves, or the use of numerology or astrology.

The philosophy and related mission of The Sound Fellowship is to investigate, focus upon, and use the three categories of sound experiences (vibrations that are felt or heard and interpret through the ear, vibrations that are felt on areas of our body other than our eardrums,  and silence or lack of vibrations) along with harmonic concepts to create a pleasurable event which may accomplish some of the following objectives:

- Relaxation
- Stress Reduction
- Attention to the present, the 'here and now,' or an escape from the 'busy mind,' though the unique "mind grabbing" properties of some of the sound instruments used in the sound bath.
- An experience of a shift from our normal connection to consciousness- otherwise known as an "out of body experience" or "altered states of consciousness."
- Improved health by balancing the chemicals such as adrenaline and cortisol within your body.

How we view our role in relaxation healing

Just as someone can perform self-massage but usually finds it is more effective to receive a massage from a knowledgeable massage practitioner, one goal of The Sound Fellowship is to enhance and augment your efforts to counteract the stressful and conflicted world we sometimes live in. Our goal is to promote the natural balance of helpful molecules and chemicals within your body to promote healing and health.  We don't profess to have all the answers to this complex issue. However, most experts agree that exercise and stress reduction through deep relaxation has positive effects on one's health.  We strive to augment any efforts you are engaged with in this area, while also providing a very enjoyable hour or hour-and-a-half experience.

The Experience of Sound

There are many ways to describe how sound, and in particular how a sound bath, may be experienced.  The Sound Fellowship envisions sound experiences as mainly falling into three categories.

Vibrations that are felt or heard and interpret through the ear

Sound is often thought of as the brain's interpretations of external vibrations that cause waves of air to vibrate our eardrums.  There, vibrations are then converted to electrical signals that are sent to the brain.  The brain then interprets the sound as having qualities such as:

- Rhythm in general
- Tones that have harmonies
- Rhythm that has a close relationship to the rhythms of the waves of our own brain activities - such as binaural beats or entraining rhythms
- Words that hold meaning such as a description of an occurrence or a relation to an emotion.
- Tones that recall an occurrence or relation to an emotion.

Vibrations that are felt on areas of our body other than our eardrums

- Through the air.  Air waves of sound caused by a vibrating object can strike our flesh and transmit that sensation and any related meanings, for example pleasurable or painful, to our brain.  Stronger sensations can be achieved by a closer proximity to the sound source.

- Through direct contact between a vibrating object, such as a vibrating metal bowl, and a person's body.  Direct contact is generally the strongest transference of a vibration between two bodies.  The sound massage technique of bowls-on-the-body is intended to achieve this sensation.  The goal of The Sound Fellowship is to create pleasurable vibrations.

Silence or lack of vibrations

The lack of vibrations - or silence and stillness - is its own experience of sound.  Used at key points in an event, silence can act to reset the sound environment and more deeply relax the occupants.
