Moving from the Inside Out

McLennan, Lesley, and Julie Peck. Moving from the inside out 7 Principles for Ease and Mastery in Movement--a Feldenkrais Approach. North Atlantic Books, 2020.

Introduction - Introduces the reader to the book's 7 organizing principles (OP) of movement.  Proposes that the reader look at experiences in new and fresh ways.

OP 1 -  Balance is Dynamic - Introduces principles of flexion and extension and associated affects on stability and instability - noting the importance of each.  Discusses the importance of using sensory feedback to keep good alignment.  Points out the importance of being aware of your center of gravity.  Try-it-yourself exercises help illustrate concepts.

OP 2 -  Skeletal Alignment Liberates Movement - Discusses the importance of good posture (aligned skeleton that is static like a post) and acture (aligned skeleton in action).   Points out the importance of only using global/phasic/fast twitch/large muscles for only short periods of time.  This is accomplished by maintaining good positional alignment through the skeleton.  Relationship to boxing pointed out. Suggests finding ways to position ourselves to our advantage in the fight against gravity.

OP3 - Progress is Cyclical - Discusses the approach to learning we use as a baby and child to move most efficiently.  Encourages as adults we revisit this method of improving our movements.

OP4 - Qualities Refine Self-Direction -  Discusses four qualities that can be used to self access physical movements (and perhaps other activities).  Those qualities are: Absence of Effort, Absence of Resistance, Presence of Reversibility, and Freedom of Breath.

OP5 - Head Guides and Pelvis Drives -  The importance of the pelvis for the transference of power from the ground is emphasized.  The spine as a connector between pelvis and head is examined.  Incredible relationship to Tae Kwon Do studies!!

OP6 - Power is Central and Precision Peripheral - This chapter discusses the importance of using the large muscles of our trunk and core to supply the power for movement and the peripheral limbs to direct precise movements.

OP7 - Pressure Organizes - Discusses sensory feedback systems.  Of the many systems including sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, pressure, temperature, etc. - this chapter focuses on pressure.

Learning from the inside out - Discusses the seven learning processes essential to any learning endevour.  Those are: Increasing Distinctions, Changing Attention, Changing Timing, Introducing Novelty, Increasing Resilience, Reflecting, and Pursuing Pleasure.

Somatics
